Shipping Mode Configuration: By Quantity (Shipping Cost Rules)
Use the By Quantity mode when you want to calculate shipping based on how many products a backer orders instead of package weight.
This mode uses the same Shipping Models and Shipping Zones you already set.
To activate quantity shipping, you first create Shipping Cost Rules.
A. Setting Up Shipping Cost Rules
Shipping cost rules define how the shipping cost will be calculated for every piece of the pledge.

Go to Project Settings > Shipping and taxes > Shipping Cost Rules.

Select Add shipping cost rule.

Enter a name and a description
These fields are internal only. Most creators name a rule after the product it applies to.
- Choose a rule behavior from the list.
B. Understanding Rule Types (Behavior)
Three rule types determine how quantity shipping interacts with other products in an order.

| Neutral | The recomended choice for projects that ship based on quantity. | When a product uses By quantity, this rule keeps that product on quantity calculation. |
| Forces by quantity shipping | Shipping cost increases with each added product | A strong rule. It forces the product and possibly other products in the order to calculate by quantity, even if they were originally set to By weight with their own rule |
| Conditional shipping costs | Sets a minimum cost for small orders | A weak rule. Products may still calculate by weight if every product in the order also uses this conditional rule. Useful for small items that can ride along with a larger order but still need a charge when bought alone |
C. Rule Price Configuration
After you create a rule, select its name to define prices.
- All configured Shipping Models appear at the top.
- For each zone and model, enter a base price.
- Add an extra copy price if needed.
- Select the pencil icon next to the zone name to update values.
D. Product Assignment and Calculation Linkage
To apply quantity pricing to a product:
- Open the product settings (Rewards or Add ons).
- Select the Shipping tab.
- Set Shipping calculation mode to By quantity.
- Select the specific calculation rule from the rule list
NOTE:
You must choose a rule for every product that uses By quantity.
E. Extra Copy Price
The additional item price or extra copy price applies when a backer buys more than one copy of the same product.
- The first item uses the base price.
- Each extra item uses the additional price.
Example
A backer orders three copies of a Core Box.
The base price is five dollars and the additional item price is one dollar.
Shipping becomes five plus one plus one for a total of seven dollars.
⚠️ Important:
Extra copy price applies only to identical products.
If you assign one rule to two different products, each product uses the base price.
Extra copy pricing only applies to additional copies of the same product that uses that rule.
