Split Payments
Split payment lets verified retailers place a pledge by paying a deposit first instead of the full pledge amount at checkout. The creator can request the remaining balance later.
This option is available for retailer pledges when the project supports split payment.
The payment timing depends on the project type and the available payment methods.

What split payment means
When split payment is available, you don’t pay the full pledge amount at checkout.
Instead, you pay a deposit first. The creator sets the deposit amount and can request the remaining balance later.
At checkout, you can see:
- the full pledge amount
- the deposit amount
- when the deposit is charged
- information that the remaining balance is requested later
Split payment in crowdfunding
In crowdfunding, the checkout button shows the full pledge amount. The deposit timing depends on how payments work for the campaign.
Use this table to understand what the checkout button means and when the deposit is charged.
Table 1. Split payment in crowdfunding checkout.
| If the campaign uses... | Checkout button | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Deferred payment | Pledge [full amount] | The deposit shown at checkout is charged only if the campaign succeeds. The creator can request the remaining balance later. |
| Instant payment | Pledge [full amount] | The deposit shown at checkout is charged when you place the pledge. The creator can request the remaining balance later. |
In both cases, you pledge the full amount, but split payment lets you pay only the deposit first.
Split payment in Late Pledge, Pledge Manager, and Express Crowdfunding
In Late Pledge, Pledge Manager, and Express Crowdfunding, the checkout button shows the deposit amount you pay now.
The checkout button shows:
Pay [deposit amount]
Under the button, you see:
A deposit toward your [full amount] pledge will be charged now. You'll be asked to pay the remaining balance later at the creator's request.
What happens after you pay the deposit
After you pay the deposit, your pledge is placed with a remaining unpaid balance.
Your order shows the total pledge amount, the amount already paid, and the amount still left to pay.
The order status changes to Partially paid. This means that the deposit has been paid, but the remaining balance still needs to be paid later.
The creator decides when to request the remaining balance.
Paying the remaining balance
When the creator requests the remaining balance, you receive instructions on how to complete the payment.
You need to pay the remaining balance to complete your pledge, unless the creator gives different instructions.
