EU Product Safety Rules: What GPSR Means for Your Projects
If your campaign delivers rewards to backers in the European Union (EU), you need to understand the General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR).
The GPSR requires products supplied to EU consumers to meet applicable safety requirements. These requirements include product labeling and an EU-based contact responsible for product safety. They apply regardless of where you or your products come from.
GPSR requirements can be complex, so Gamefound helps you manage the required information. Dedicated fields let you add GPSR information and share it with backers. For instructions, see GPSR.

Your responsibilities as a creator
Adding GPSR information on Gamefound is only one part of your responsibilities. Before you send rewards to backers in the EU, prepare and maintain the product and safety information that your products require.
Depending on your product, this may include:
- Product identification and manufacturer information.
- Product risk assessments and technical documentation.
- Relevant test results or certificates.
- Traceability information.
- Required warnings and instructions.
- Translations of safety information, where required.
Keep this documentation with your product records and keep it up to date.
If your product’s manufacturer is outside the EU
If the manufacturer is based outside the EU, the product must have a responsible person in the EU. If you publish rewards under your own brand, you are usually the manufacturer for GPSR purposes.
Depending on your supply chain, the responsible person can be, for example:
- An EU importer.
- An authorized representative that the manufacturer appoints.
- In certain circumstances, a fulfillment service provider based in the EU.
Include the responsible person’s name, postal address, and electronic address wherever the GPSR requires them:
- On the product itself, its packaging, label, or accompanying instructions and documentation.
- In your online offer.
Make sure this information is in place before you make your products available to backers in the EU.
If a safety issue comes up
If you become aware that a product supplied through Gamefound may be unsafe or may not meet applicable requirements, contact Gamefound as soon as possible.
Gamefound has procedures for handling product safety issues. Where required, Gamefound works with you and the relevant authorities to support appropriate corrective actions. These may include communicating safety warnings or recall information to affected backers.
If a safety issue arises, you also need to act without delay. This may mean:
- Pausing distribution.
- Recalling the product.
- Notifying the authorities.
Gamefound’s actions don’t replace any obligations that apply to you under the GPSR.
Agree on responsibilities with your partners
Your manufacturers, importers, and fulfillment partners may also have GPSR responsibilities. Agree on who handles each responsibility before fulfillment starts.
